Millennium Beaches describes how over GBP5 billion is being spent to clean up Britains beaches in time for the new millennium. Various innovative approaches have been taken by the water companies to bring bathing areas up to the mandatory requirements of the 1976 EU Bathing Water Directive as well as meet the Urban Waste Treatment Directive, which bans sea disposal of sewage sludge from the end of 1998.
